Wouldn’t it be nice to make an extra 500 dollars a month from the comfort of your home? It is enough money to pay for utilities, the internet bill, the car payment, and maybe even save up for a nice vacation or those spendy weekly date nights!
But how do you actually go about making that extra money?
It doesn’t have to be as hard as you may think. Here are some things you can do to make an extra $500 a month from home…

#1 Make Money Off of Your Old Stuff!
I know you have a closet full of clothes you haven’t worn in ages. Or stacks of those old books and games piled up into the spare bedroom? (I know I can’t be alone here #hoarder). You’re probably thinking…there’s noone out there who could find value in my old stuff? WRONG!
You guys…there’s over 7 billon people on this earth and there is probably someone looking for exactly what you have right now. You just have to know where to look or go. Make money off of your old stuff by selling it on eBay, Craigslist, Facebook, or locally. You could also take your stuff down to the local pawn or consignment shop and see what they will give you for it.
#2 Get Paid to Watch Videos or Read Emails on Your Phone!
Do you have 30 seconds of free time while waiting in the check-out line at Trader Joe’s? Or maybe in the pick up line at your child’s school?
If so, then maybe it is time for you to get paid to watch videos or read emails. There are many companies that will send new deals and offers right to your phone and all they want in return is for you to watch a two-minute video or read their promotions.
Here are some recommended sites:
- Swagbucks An easy tool that gives you cash back for shopping, watching videos, and answering surveys. There’s even a 10 dollar bonus just for signing up! You can redeem your points for gift cards or cash back via pay pal!
- Survey Junkie: Share your opinion on a variety of surveys in exchange for e-gift cards or cash back!
- Inbox Dollars: Inbox Dollars pays you watch videos, take surveys, read emails, and even play different video games!
#3 Get Paid to Take Photos!
Are you good at taking photos? Then this is a great opportunity to make an extra $500 a month.
You can do this right now if you have a camera, computer, and internet connection. You could take photos and sell them on stock photo websites like Shutterstock or IStock. Or, if you are feeling very motivated, you could start a part-time photography business! Buuuuut that’s a lesson for a different day!
#4 Sell Crafts Online
This is a great way to earn money, especially if you are crafty. Okaaayy, even if you aren’t there are endless possibilities…and Youtube is a great tool to learn a new craft!
You can make unique crafts sell them on Etsy to make money from home. Some ideas are watercolor paintings, t-shirts, earrings, woodworking, mugs, etc. Check out my Etsy shop here! (We do have a glowforge which was quite the investment…but it’s great for non-craft people like myself!)
Want to start your own Etsy shop? Check out the this guide for beginners here!
#5 Teach Classes Online
If you have a skill that people are willing to pay for then use that talent to make money. You can offer lessons or teach students on various subjects like sports, dance, singing, guitar, etc.
Outschool is a great online teaching platform that allows teachers to share their skills. On Outschool, you will find everything from book clubs, to tutoring, to acting classes.
Are you great at painting? Then start a class that teaches students the basics of watercolor painting.
What about animal tracking? There’s a need for that as well!
As a former teacher myself, I could use the OUtschool platform to host small group or individual reading or math lessons!
#6 Freelance work from home jobs
Freelance work is a great way to make money. You can offer copy-writing, blog post services, editing, graphic design, and more!
Here are a few websites where you can offer freelance services for money :
- Upwork – Sign up and browse through people who need freelance services. Once you sign up, it is a good idea to check your email daily because there are freelancers already bidding on jobs. You can also bid on a project if you have the right qualifications plus a competitive rate.
- Fiverr – You can post your services on this site and individuals will reach out to you! So anything from an eBook ghostwriting to design work, etc . It all depends on what you can offer as a service or product. Personally, I have used individuals from Fiverr to write some blog posts for me and I’ve always had a wonderful experience!
#7 Making money with social media
Whaaaaaat?! Social media is more than a time-sucking black hole?! (Sorry… that was a bit dramatic). Anywhooooo, did you know how to use social media to make money?
Maybe you are good at writing, marketing, design work, etc .
If so, then maybe it is time for you to make money from your skills. There are many companies and businesses (especially in today’s digital age) that will pay upfront for services like the ones mentioned above. I have found social media manager jobs on Indeed before, but you could also reach out to up-and-coming start ups.
Tip! I would suggest you start your own Instagram/Facebook group to practice before reaching out to companies. Test out what works/what doesn’t and start growing a personal portfolio. If you are great at growing your own social media, you can even get paid via brand deals and reel bonuses! More on this later…
#8 Start a blog
My favorite one on this list! Starting a blog is definitely not a get-rich-quick scheme, BUT the earning potentials are limitless. So whether you are hoping to earn an additional 500 dollars a month or 10,000, a blog can open up SO MANY doors.
I’m not going to get into allllllllll of the details here, but in short, once you have established a blog, you can make money through selling products and services or through affiliate marketing, or advertisement.
The great part about blogging is you can make money while having all the flexibility with your routine. Unlike other jobs, you don’t have to be at the office five days a week.
The key is getting yourself knowledgeable in your industry and putting out fresh content daily. This will attract visitors and hopefully convert them into customers.
